Regenerative Medicine Q & A

What is regenerative medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a treatment technique where Dr. Patel uses your own stem cells to treat the root cause of disease and injuries in your joints, bones, muscles, and tissue. These cells replace diseased or damaged tissue, triggering your body’s natural healing process.

Advances in regenerative medicine have made it possible for you to receive this type of therapy to heal common issues, like lower back pain and joint pain, without surgical intervention.

What is stem cell therapy?

You have millions of stem cells that your body uses to heal and repair itself. When you have degenerative disease or injury to your muscles, ligaments, or tendons, Dr. Patel can use these same stem cells to rejuvenate and regenerate injured areas.

Stem cells are unique in that they can become specialized cells, including blood cells, brain cells, and muscle cells. Dr. Patel uses these stem cells to treat the following conditions:

  • ACL tears
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Degenerative disc disease

Dr. Patel determines if you’re a good candidate for stem cell therapy based on your medical history and the specifics of your injury.

What can I expect with stem cell therapy?

If Dr. Patel determines stem cell therapy is right for you, he first must harvest the cells. To do this, Dr. Patel applies a local anesthetic to the injection site and uses a needle to withdraw blood.

To prepare stem cells for implantation, Dr. Patel places the blood sample into a centrifuge to separate the stem cells from the platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Once divided, Dr. Patel re-injects the stem cells into the injured area. He can also inject the PRP back into your body to expedite the healing process.

Stem cell therapy is an outpatient procedure and you can expect to go home and rest following your treatment.

What happens after stem cell therapy?

Immediately following surgery, you might feel tenderness in the treatment area for several days and Dr. Patel may limit your activities for several weeks after receiving stem cells. If you experience pain, Dr. Patel recommends over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol. He won’t recommend anti-inflammatory medications, as they can affect the functionality of the new stem cells.

It can take several weeks for the stem cells to regenerate and improve your pain and mobility, and you should notice optimal results within six months.
